TRIP DETAILS

The islands:

Murano is the largest of the islands in the lagoon. Founded by fugitives from Altino, at the time of the Lombard invasions the population of Oderzo also took refuge there. The fame of the island remains linked to the famous glass art and during the visit of the island a stop at the furnaces is a must where a master glassmaker will give a demonstration of the processing (always explained) of both blown and modeled glass. Do not miss the glass museum and the Church of S.S. Maria and Donato, a masterpiece of Venetian-Byzantine art.

Burano is certainly the most picturesque of the islands in the Lagoon thanks to its brightly colored houses outside which, even today, fishermen mend their fishing nets and women embroider the famous lace.

Torcello is the most famous of the islands in the upper Lagoon. When the Huns, led by Attila, invaded Altino in the 5th century, its inhabitants took refuge here too; then, once the danger had passed, they returned to the city.
