A unique experience to discover the Gorges of Tiberius in the Madonie park a few kilometers from Cefalù. An excursion, which lasts about 2 hours, which involves the crossing of the Unesco geosite by raft and a walk along the Pollina river downstream to the small Gorges or upstream to the ponds where it is possible to swim in the summer.
The Gorges, a Geopark site recognized by UNESCO, are about 400 meters long and date back to the Upper Triassic. The Gorges are located in the Pollina river between the territories of San Mauro Castelverde, Castelbuono and Pollina in the Madonie Park a few kilometers from Cefalù. Inside they can be observed: -U miricu-, the numerous nests with eggs laid by the birds that inhabit this environment, the gastropod fossils dating back to about 120 million years ago, the boulder in the center of the path once a secret passage of brigands and wanted people who lived in the numerous caves and hiding places in the area, the play of light and obviously uncontaminated vegetation. Along the river it is possible to admire a typically fluvial flora and fauna. Bee-eaters, yellow dancers, buzzards, a pair of golden eagles, tawny owls, owls, crabs, eels, frogs, dragonflies, are some species of animals that live in the area of the Gorges of Tiberius.
