We will see the Celestino V Cave and cross the beautiful Path of Silence, until reaching and visiting the Hermitage of Our Lady of the Altar, the first Celestinian hermitage in Abruzzo; place where all the history of the famous and admired Pope Celestino V began.

TRIP DETAILS

Our excursion will start from the sources of the Aventino River in Palena, a place surrounded by nature and where you can also eat outdoors in a picnic area. Not far from the Geosite of Capo di Fiume, an important fossil deposit in Abruzzo.

The whole itinerary runs through the forest, our first stop, about half an hour from the starting point is the Grotta dei Monaci. It is located above a steep wooded hill and inside you will discover fantastic stories about its use during the various historical periods.

As a second stop we will meet the cave where popular tradition indicates the presence of Celestino V (famous Pope and hermit) and a shelter under rock that still carries the signatures of pilgrims who from '900' decided to undertake the pilgrimage.

Just before arriving at the Hermitage of Madonna dell'Altare we will cross the short Path of Silence; a trail set up with panels that recall silence and meditation.

After walking the path, we will make a short stop at the Celestinian Hermitage and in case of opening the structure we can visit it and then go down on the way back. (The Hermitage is always open in the summer months).
