TREKKING TO THE HERMITAGE OF SAN NICOLA AND THE FORD OF COCCIA

WHAT WILL YOU DO :

The Guado di Coccia is located in Palena, within the territory of the Maiella National Park.
This is the only point of junction that connects the Eastern and Western Maiella and divides Monte Porrara from the main massif.

The highest point of the ford reaches a maximum altitude of 1674 mt.
It takes its name from "Coccia" the small mountain of li not far away that overlooks it to the South today Locality "Serra Campanile".

The pass connects the Peligna Valley to that of the Aventino, and is one of the most fascinating places in the National Park, rich in history and natural beauty is often frequented by herds of cows and horses grazing.

During the excursion we will cross an ancient pasture used since the period of the Italian peoples, we will see examples of agriculture at high altitude dating back to the 800'.
After a short stop in the ruins of the medieval hermitage, we will reach the Ford, then on the way back to meet the Source of Coccia, famous local source, used as a drinking trough by animals grazing.

TRIP DETAILS

After a brief introduction on the route and equipment check we will leave to the Ford of Coccia.

The excursion begins with the crossing of the Coccia Canyon.
We will reach the high altitude pastures called "Melete", where it is often possible to meet herds of cows grazing, especially when approaching the Hermitage of San Nicola.

We will reach one of the most unknown hermitages of the Maiella crossing an ancient tratturo "among the largest remaining in Abruzzo".
We will make a short stop at the Hermitage of San Nicola and then start again and take a cart that will lead us to our arrival point at 1674 meters above sea level, where we will make a short stop and packed lunch at the discretion of the hiker.

On the way back we will pass by the beautiful Fonte di Coccia, a high altitude drinking trough; one of the symbols of mountain trekking in Palena.
